Program Highlighting Gay Native Americans

Takes News Documentary Radio Network Category

New York, NY, October 15, 2003 – Outright Radio, based in Tucson, Arizona and broadcast

on nearly 100 stations across the US, has won the Edward R. Murrow Award for a one-hour

program titled Out on the Rez: Stories from Gay Native America. The program won in the

News Documentary Radio Network category.

The Executive Producer and Host of Outright Radio, David Gilmore, accepted the award and

stated, “Outright Radio is honored that this show, filled with the heartache and humor of

being openly gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender at the beginning of the 21st century, is

being recognized for bringing our community’s unique experiences to a broad and

appreciative audience.”

Outright Radio, now beginning its 6th season, is distributed by Public Radio International

(PRI), and is the leading nationally syndicated radio show featuring first-person narratives,

personal stories, and insightful interviews from America’s gay, lesbian, bisexual and

transgender (GLBT) communities. Outright Radio seeks to entertain while helping to eliminate

homophobia based on ignorance and invisibility by featuring true-life stories of positive, out,

GLBT people, sharing a glimpse into their lives.

Out on the Rez: Stories from Gay Native America, features a rare inside look at some gay

(also know in Native American culture as Two-Spirit) people living on or near their Native

American reservations. Segment producers Daniel Kraker and Eulynda Toledo Benalli

present several touching personal stories of the Navajo, Crow, and Southern Ute tribes as

told by Sage, Dee, Betty, Carrie, and Daniel.

The show, along with other Outright Radio shows is available online in RealAudio format at
